Chaenomeles speciosa 'Kinshiden' (Flowering Quince)The common name for Chaenomeles speciosa is flowering quince. It is also known as Chinese quince or Japanese quince. 
 
Here are some characteristics of the flowering quince:
Appearance
A deciduous shrub with dark green leaves, spiny thorns, and red flowers in the spring. The flowers can also be pink, white, or green. 
 
Size
Can grow to be 5–8 ft or more than 8 ft tall. 
 
Uses
Can be used as a hedge, at the back of a border, or en masse. The fruit can be used to make jam and jellies. 
 
Care
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. The plants are drought tolerant, but irrigation is recommended during periods of drought. Trim the shrubs to keep them compact.
