Cyperus alternifolius is a perennial sedge with grass-like triangular stems that can grow to be 2–3 ft tall. The stems have 10–25 drooping leaf-like bracts at the top that resemble an umbrella's ribs. In the summer, the bract axils produce greenish-brown clusters of flowers.
