Appearance: This bamboo has very dark culms with thin green stripes, white nodes, and clustered branches at the nodes.
Size: It can grow to be 10–15 meters tall and 6–8 centimeters in diameter.
Climate: It grows best in tropical or subtropical climates, but can also grow in southern temperate climates.
Soil: It prefers sandy loam to clay loam soil with a pH of 5.5–7.0.
Uses: The timber from this bamboo is dense and heavy, and can be used for construction, furniture, and fencing. 
Gigantochloa atroviolacea is native to regions with tropical or subtropical climates, but is only known in cultivation. It's widely cultivated in central and western Java, and has also been introduced to other regions, including Sumatra, India, Thailand, and Australia.
