Mallotus philippinensis is a small to medium-sized tree or shrub that is part of the spurge family. It is found in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Old World, including India, Sri Lanka, the Western Himalayas, Formosa, Malesia, Australia, and Melanesia. In India, it is common in the outer Himalayas, Karnataka, Kerala, and Maharashtra. 
The fruit of the Mallotus philippinensis tree is covered in a red powdery substance that can be used as a dye.
