Costus speciosus is a perennial herb with white flowers and spirally arranged leaves. It is native to India and can be found in tropical moist deciduous forests, tropical semi-evergreen forests, and plains. 
 
The plant is used in Ayurveda therapies in India and Nepal. Its rhizomes are eaten as a vegetable and pickled, and are used as a purgative, to treat coughs, and to rid parasitic worms. The leaves are used to control diabetes.
