The common name for Dendrocalamus longispathus is long-sheath bamboo. It is a large, tufted bamboo species that can grow up to 20 meters tall. It is native to Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Thailand, but has become an exotic species in South Asia.

When young, the culms are glaucous green, but turn grayish-green when mature. 
 
The nodes are slightly swollen and often rooting. 
 
The internodes are 25–60 cm long, 6–10 cm in diameter, and covered with dark-brown pubescence and long papery remnants of sheaths. 
 
The walls are 1.2 cm thick. 
 
It has a large panicle of interruptedly spicate clusters of spikelets. 
 
The caryopsis is ovoid and yellow, with a beak formed by the base of the style.
